The purpose of John Harrison’s longitude marine chronometer was to measure time accurately on the high seas in order to determine geographical longitude. Easier said than done. Harrison spent almost his entire life developing a ship’s chronometer suitable for use on the high seas before finally succeeding.

Kronsegler H4 Longitude Timekeeper: From 2,5 to 4 Hz

The KronSegler H4 Longitude Timekeeper automatic watch series is visually modeled on Harrison’s marine chronometer, but with a diameter of 42.5 mm and a thickness of only 9.9 mm, it is optimized for today’s wrist-wearing habits. The dial is covered by a flat sapphire crystal for maximum scratch resistance.

The slim, fast-oscillating movement with 28,800 vph (4 Hz) is mounted on 24 jewels and operates at a significantly higher frequency than Harrison’s clock, making the movements of the second hand barely perceptible. The spherical crown allows the watch to be easily adjusted or wound if necessary – however, the smooth-running, decorated rotor also ensures a constant supply of energy.

A marine chronometer as inspiration

Just like the original H4 ship’s clock, the inner hour scale features Roman numerals and the outer minute scale features Arabic numerals. A modified, framed date display is integrated at the 6 o’clock position and can be quickly set using the easy-to-find center crown position.

Instead of the hand shape used in the 18th century, which is impractical by today’s standards, the Kronsegler H4 has easy-to-read, classically elegant hands whose tips are filled with fluorescent luminous material.

The crown resembles a model of the globe marked with lines of longitude and latitude. The lugs on the case have a curved, inward-folding shape, similar to the bow waves of a ship. The body is brushed lengthwise, while the bezel and the waves of the lugs are polished to a shine.
The watch is available in five colors with a silver, copper, or olive gold case and a green, sand-colored, or blue dial. A new type of IPG gold plating, available for the first time in olive gold and copper, gives the watch an unusual, almost antique look.

The brown leather strap has an alligator embossed pattern and features a KRONSEGLER crest button and a folding clasp with a double safety push-button. The H4 comes in a green Kronsegler watch box with a certificate card, detailed booklet, and polishing cloth.
